About PesaTrack
PesaTrack is a free Android app that passively tracks M-PESA and Kenyan bank SMS transactions. It parses each message on-device, categorises the spend, and shows budgets and analytics — without cloud sync, without ads, and with no third-party analytics unless you opt in. It's made in Kenya and available on the Google Play Store.
Mission
Help people improve their finances by building a better spending and investment culture. Not by generating anxiety about every transaction. Not by turning saving into a streak. By making the fact of where your money went visible enough that better decisions become obvious.
The six principles
Every feature — from a chart to a notification — is checked against these:
-
Awareness before action
Surface spending facts you didn't know before suggesting changes.
-
Nudge, don't nag
At most one proactive insight per session. Never use fear framing or dark patterns.
-
Save and invest by default
Every analytics surface should, where honest, include a "what you could save or invest" framing.
-
Privacy is non-negotiable
No feature that requires sending raw SMS or PII off-device without explicit, revocable consent.
-
Honest numbers
No projections without visible assumptions. No "savings" figures that ignore transaction fees.
-
Local-first
Features degrade gracefully offline.
Why we don't do certain things
Cloud sync of transaction data. The app does not sync your amounts, recipients, categories, or notes anywhere — not to us, not to a third party. If we ever offer sync, it will be an explicit, opt-in, revocable feature. Not a silent update.
Recommending specific stocks or brokers. Off-limits. Investment framing on the analytics screens is always an illustration (with the rate and horizon assumption visible) — not personalised financial advice.
Streaks, badges, and "days without going over budget". Anything that rewards more transactions or amplifies shame is out. We reward awareness and saving.
Third-party analytics or ad SDKs by default. The one piece of telemetry — anonymous Firebase Analytics — is opt-in and off by default. See Privacy for the exhaustive list of what is and isn't sent.
